Wall cracks caused by subsidence

I have read that subsidence in North Plymouth could be an issue. What subsidence issues will the house survey reveal?

Movement of a house on a structural level is called subsidence. However, subsidence should be distinguished from the normal settlement of a home.

It is not always obvious that subsidence is at work because some of the signs could comfortably be as the result of several factors. In some cases, the presence of buried organic material, which then rots or breaks down, can also undermine the foundations. This causes the subsoil to be compacted as its volume is reduced, by the sheer weight and pressure of the building above.

Finding the cause of any subsidence is key. The removal of trees may make the problem worse, however, so professional advice should be sought. Chartered surveyors should be able to identify a subsidence problem, while structural engineers may also be required.
