Communities across the north of England have been badly affected by flood with severe warnings in place in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

More than 30 flood warnings are in place as the Environment Agency and rescue services work to reduce the risk of more flooding and keep communities safe.

A month's worth of rain fell in one day on the area, leading to rivers bursting their banks and more than 400 homes flooded and 1,200 properties evacuated.

Rescuers retrieved some people from their homes around Doncaster by boat. Meanwhile, the military has been drafted in to use its helicopters to boost flood defences.

High cost of flood damage

With more heavy rain forecast for later this week, the Environment Agency has warned that the risk of flooding remains high for those areas.

England has been particularly badly hit by severe flooding in recent years. No region has escaped the flooding, but northern areas such as Yorkshire, Cumbria and the Humber have been most at risk.

Flood damage costs UK households and businesses around £1.4 billion every year.

Flood threats rising

And the increased risk of climate change, bringing with it warmer temperatures and heavier rainfall, means the number of homes in the UK at risk from flooding - currently one in six - is expected to double by 2050.

Homes that have been badly affected by flooding can often be weakened by the amount of water that's poured into their foundations.

Anyone buying a home should always insist that their conveyancing solicitor orders a flood search that will reveal if the property is in a flood risk area and any historic flood events.

Survey will reveal property history

Backing up the results of that search with a comprehensive RICS Level 3 Survey, carried out by a chartered surveyor who is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), is also essential.

Surveyor Local only works with members of RICS to offer home buyers a comprehensive range of surveys that are affordable and will provide the information required on a property.
